When Motorola decide to revamp the original Milestone, losing the slide out keyboard didn’t just give them the chance to make the new Milestone XT720 slimmer and lighter, but also add in some new design tweaks as well. The new phone has a rather unique look therefore, a bit of a mix of the old and the new Milestone; but it has a quality look and feel to it, even if it isn’t going to win prizes for being the best looking smartphone on the market.

As one of the biggest names in the mobile market, Nokia has never seemed to quite transfer their success elsewhere into their smartphones. They seem to have had more near misses than big hits, and with the Apples and HTC’s seemingly unable to put a foot wrong, Nokia has needed to come up with something impressive for a while now, in order to avoid getting left behind – could the Nokia N8 be the answer? When you first see the N8 it’s difficult not to like it, for the fact that it looks good, but more because Nokia have actually made a very attractive mobile at last. The N8 is slimmer and less bulky than many of Nokia’s other smartphone attempts and wouldn’t look out of place next to an iPhone or the Nexus One. The lines are helped by the fact there’s no detachable battery cover, pointing to a more stable operating system that doesn’t need to have the battery removed to reset it, which is more good news.

The N8 has the required touchscreen display of any serious smartphone contender, and at 3.5 inches it’s more than adequate, for users and to keep up with the competition. What will grab your attention however, is the incredible 12 megapixel camera with xenon flash that is very neatly housed in the N8’s slimline body, capable of amazing photographs, as well as 720p HD video recording, with an mini HDMI output for playback on larger screens. Nokia may be trying to make a bit of a point with what it says is the best phone camera in the world, and it has succeeded. Long renowned for the quality of their phones, LG have followed demand and started to develop a range of mobiles that will try to challenge in the smartphone market. Using the Android 1.6 version, the Optimus has a slightly outdated operating system when compared to some of the other Android phones on the market, but it is more than enough for an entry-level smartphone. Overall performance is excellent, and with your choice of apps from the Android Market, and good battery life, most users will find it is more than enough for what they need from a smartphone.

The 3 megapixel camera is a bit of a disappointment compared to the others available, but it can still provide decent enough images to keep most happy. Features like autofocus and a simple to use interface help you get the most our of the camera, but no flash and average quality video capture make it ok rather outstanding.

While the LG Optimus might not be up their with the iPhone 4 or Google’s Nexus One, it doesn’t aim to be. LG have set about creating a feature-packed smartphone for the mid market, and have done a pretty good job. This good-looking touchscreen phone makes up for its shortcomings by providing smartphone features that won’t hurt your pocket.

We have been telling Blackberry for some time that they needed to upgrade their entries in the PDA market by increasing processor speed, adding memory and 3G capabilities and installing a screen with better resolution. Blackberry has responded to those criticisms with the Bold, and the Bold is everything we were hoping for. It is an excellent phone, a great entertainment system and a perfect PDA.
